moonlit reviews Art Club Author and Illustrator: Rashad Doucet Publisher: Little, Brown Ink By: Kenta 8th Grade **MILD SPOILER WARNING ¯\_(ˆˆ)_/¯** Art Club is a graphic novel by Rashad Doucet. It follows Dale Donovan, an aspiring artist with a strong passion for comics. This book follows Dale on his journey to assemble a team of capable young artists and to show the adults who doubt him that art can be more than just a hobby. Overall rating/score (imo): 5.7/10, [ØØØOO]. Why this rating? Pros: 1. Fun, down-to-earth “follow your dreams” storyline. Inspirational for young kids. Not just a story that has a problem and a solution, but more emotional depth and personal experiences. Examples: characters encounter real roadblocks like budget limits or unfair pressure from adults with authority. 2. Relatable characters. Characters live unique but realistic lives. Examples: Dale lives with his grandpa, because his parents are away at work. Dale’s friend and fellow artist MacKenzie is being raised by a single mother and struggles with her mother’s strict boundaries. 3. The setting feels present-day. Incorporates video games, digital art, etc. into story. Increases the relatability of the story, as kids who read this book likely also play video games and draw on a tablet. Cons: 1. In some places, the rough and messy art-style feels less like a style and more unfinished/unpolished; lack of effort. 2. The storyline often feels predictable, as if I wouldn’t have to read the rest of the book to know what will happen next. (but then again, this book is aimed at kids who are younger than me) 3. In some places, the existence of modern technology in the story feels forced or unnecessary. For example, repetitive use of phrases like “OMG,” “IRL,” or “JPEG” could be confusing for readers. 4. Smaller issue (that I have with this book): in the book, there is a fictional sport called “sportsball,” which is a clear representation for basketball. I feel that fictionalizing something so small is unnecessary, especially when most of the other things in the book are pulled straight from real life. That’s all I really have to say about this book. I hope you liked my review! -Kenta . Review published February 25, 2026 Jean-Michel Basquiat: King Pleasure Authors: Lisane Basquiat, Jeanine Heriveaux, Nora Fitzpatrick, Ileen Gallagher Publisher: Rizzoli Electa By: some one dude random anonimyus 8th Grade I got the book "Jean-Michel Basquiat : King Pleasure" after seeing a Basquiat exhibit with the same title. The book is about the artist Jean Michel Basquiat, his life, artworks, and upbringing and it has some cool pictures of himself and his family and his work. I liked some of his art, its pretty cool, and honestly kinda weird, not necessarily in a bad way. His style is called neo-expressionism and a lot of his work looks like graffiti/street art. This book was written by his family, and talks about him throughout the years (him growing up, where he grew up, inspiration, etc.) I feel like this book would be good if you have a project or if you're curious about him or his style. I would rate the book highly, especially if you have an interest in art so I'd rate it somewhere around a 7 or an 8 out of 10. Pretty good book and artwork. 👍 Review published February 19, 2026 Maus: A Survivor's Tale My Father Bleeds History Author and Illustrator: Art Spiegelman Publisher: Pantheon By: W.S. 8th grade Maus by Art Spiegelman is a graphic novel for teenagers and older children that teaches about World War 2 in the form of the Germans being cats, and the Jewish people being mice. The book, while seeming at a glance for younger children, does however contain a few curse words and topics for older children (such as suicide, executions, etc.). Overall, though, it is a great book and the storytelling is great, so you can get more attached to the characters while reading. The book tells the story of a Jewish man asking his father about his experience with living through the Holocaust and World War 2, Would recommend! Review published October 10, 2025 The Puppets of Spelhorst Author: Kate DiCamillo Illustrator: Julie Morstad Publisher: Candlewick By: rst 7th Grade The Book "The Puppets of Spelhorst" is a short, but a-mazing story. Five Puppets are inseparable, and Spelhorst, an old man with no family, buys them, but by the next morning he sadly passes away. The puppets are shut in a trunk to be delivered to an unknown place... *Spoiler ahead: The puppets, one by one, get taken away from each other, and have to find their way back to each other.* Kate DiCamillo has a way of telling stories like no other, she makes them sad, but good, and sad in a good way . And she really depicts that well in her stories. I would rate this book a 9.5 out of 10. Its really spot-on. Review published July 7, 2025 Toilet Bound Hanako-Kun Author: Aidaro Translators: Alethea Nibley, Athena Nibley Letterers: Tania Biswas, James Moriarty Publisher: Yen Press By: yea i'm just a guy 7th Grade Jibaku Shōnen Hanako-kun (Toilet bound Hanako-Kun) is a good manga series. It has a mix of comedy and suspense. It's about a girl who goes to the toilet (💀) to summon Hanako, who she thinks is a girl, but he turns out to be a boy... and he wants her to clean the bathroom for him. Then they meet this dude named Kou and he's pretty chill, but he tried to kill Hanako at first. It kinda sounds weird but it's a good series. I read the first 20 books already and I'd rate them 9/10. Recommended for like ages 12+ (?), something like that. Review published July 1, 2025 Author Profile:Betty C. Tang Betty C. Tang is the author/illustrator of the graphic novel, Parachute Kids , a National Book Award Longlist Selection, an Asian/Pacific Librarians Association (APALA) Honor Book, and an Indie Bestseller. She is also the New York Times bestselling illustrator of the Jacky Ha-Ha graphic novel by James Patterson and Chris Grabenstein. She has worked for various animation studios including Disney TV and Dreamworks Animation, and co-directed the Chinese animated feature, Where's the Dragon? Born in Taiwan, she now lives in Los Angeles. Outsider Kids Author and Illustrator: Betty C. Tang Publisher: Graphix By: some one dude random anonimyus 7th Grade The book Outsider Kids is a sequel to the book Parachute Kids - another good book (go check it out :) ) Outsider Kids is just as good as Parachute Kids . There are 3 kids from Taiwan and their parents' visas are not working, so the parents are in Taiwan still. Their stuck up rich cousin comes and visits, only to learn that she is living with them while her mom is in Taiwan. She is annoying and thinks the world revolves around her. Ann (the main character) and the cousin don't get along. The cousin eventually exposes them, as the ending is a moving surprise. good book, 8.5/10 for ages 12 and up? Happy AAPI Heritage Month! Review published May 24, 2025 The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian Author: Sherman Alexie Illustrator: Ellen Forney Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers By: RST 7th Grade This book was recommended to me by my ELA teacher. W man, this book was g o o d. It's super funny throughout, and the author does a very good job making the book very readable. It's about this Native American guy who ends up going to an all white school. The book is NOT very family friendly, as there is explicit language in the book, but that just adds on to make the book hilarious. W book, W teacher, W, W, W 👍 Review published April 22, 2025 The Cartoonists Club Author and Illustrator: Raina Telgemeier and Scott McCloud Publisher: Graphix By: Jordan 5th Grade The Cartoonists Club is a really good book because it helps you understand how comics/zines work. I would recommend it to kids who want to make comics. I enjoyed reading this book because it explains body language, emotions, and how to show that in stories through the illustrations. It talks about personal lives and how some people don’t want other people to be cartoonists. An interesting part of the book is how it explains the process of making a book. For example, there is a page that has all the jobs of making a book. Like plotter, scripter, penciller, inker, colorist, letterer, and editor. ( I learned all of these from the book😅😅😅) I would rate this book a 9.5 /10!!! I definitely recommend it to people. :D Review published April 10, 2025 Huda F Cares Author and Illustrator: Hudha Fahmy Publisher: Dial Books Book 2 of Huda series By: gedagedigedagedo 7th grade Huda F Cares is about a Muslim girl who goes on vacation with her sisters. Her family makes her go to Disney World and she has to travel with her sisters. The book is pretty funny and it's part of a series, the first book is called Huda F Are You, if you want to read it. Huda F Cares is a pretty good book for people above 10. I don't wanna spoil the book so ur gonna hafta read it urself if u wanna find out more! I would rate this book 8.5/10! I recommend :) -gedagedigedao Review published March 29, 2025 Author Profile: Huda Fahmy Huda Fahmy is a critically acclaimed Author/Illustrator. She grew up in Dearborn, Michigan and has loved comics since she was a kid. Huda taught English for eight years before she started writing about her experiences as a visibly Muslim woman in America. She is a National Book Award finalist for her YA graphic novel Huda F Cares?. Huda and her family reside in Texas. Look out for Huda's newest book, Huda F Wants to Know? (release date April 1, 2025) . Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Author: J.K. Rowling Illustrator: Mary GrandPré Publisher: Scholastic By: Izzy 7th Grade This book is a part of a series but I am choosing one of my favorite books in the series which is the first book, Harry Potter and Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling. J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is more than just a fantasy novel - it’s an invitation to a world where magic feels real, friendships are powerful, and learning goes beyond textbooks. As a 7th grader, I found this book to be a masterclass in world-building, character development, and the timeless battle between good and evil. Review published March 27,2025 The Inheritance Games Author: Jennifer Lynn Barnes Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers By: AGR 7th Grade This book is really really amazing! I would easily give it 4.7 out of 5 stars. One of my friends from camp recommended this book and after I read it I became obsessed. I would give this to any kid if I had the chance. The book is about this girl named Avery Kylie Grahams who is a nobody and lives in her car. At the beginning of the book she gets a letter that says that she has to go to a will reading for Tobias Hawthorne, a millionaire who had died recently. The letter claims that he left her money. * Tiny spoiler right here * Little does Avery know that Tobias Hawthorne actually left her all of his money, his angry relatives, and a house full of secrets. I totally recommend this book for kids ages 10-15. You should start reading it right now! Review published March 1, 2025 Swim Team Author/Illustrator: Johnnie Christmas Publisher: HarperAlley By Izzy 7th Grade Swim team was mostly about Bree who is in middle school and she loves puzzles but she doesn't know how to swim but she learned how to swim. My favorite part of the book was when she was going to swim class and they had to do a try out race to get on the swim team for her school and * spoiler alert* she beat everyone by a lot and made the team. I really hope other people read this book and enjoy it. Review published February 14, 2025 Gamerville Author/Illustrator: Johnnie Christmas Publisher: HarperAlley By a nonimisssywissy <3 7th Grade Brooklyn, NY Gamerville is a very... interesting book (graphic novel) to say the least. It's about this dude who likes gaming a little too much and doesn't touch grass, has bags under his eyes, etc. And he qualified for this thing called Gamerville where he competes against others to be the "top dog" (idk 💀). But his parents do something un-sigma and send him to some camp across from Gamerville so he wants to escape to Gamerville. 🎮👾💻 (Oh yeah there's also this weird kid who dresses up as an animal I don't even know man. 💀 ) Artwork was pretty sigma. 🤫🧏 If u are a no-life gamer like me then u would prolly like it 👍 so I recommend it to them/u. coco-aaah-co-whats-up-my-ninja. WHO HQ Series Author: Roberta Edwards Publisher: Penguin Workshop By Anonymous 5th Grade Brooklyn, NY This book was very good because I got to read more about the Former President Barack Obama, of The United states of America. So, according to the book, Barack Obama was born in Hawaii US and moved to Indonesia when he was a certain age. It was really interesting to me because I did not know about this until I read this book. I also learned that Barack Obama liked to play basketball when he was younger, and I did not know that. I also did not know he was a lawyer & he went to Harvard. In summary, he was very smart and was one of the best US presidents, (maybe the best.) He is a great person & this book taught me more about him. RECOMMENDED IF YOU LIKE STUFF LIKE THIS!!! Review published 11/08/2024 Gravity Falls Journal 3 Author: Alex Hirsch Publisher: Disney Press By AAA 5th Grade Brooklyn, NY Amazing book, recommended if you like weird things! Both funny, confusing and sometimes horrifying. Filled with bizarre creatures and ridiculous stuff. For example the plaidypus, the stomach faced duck, the leprecorn, steve and more in this amazing book of oddities. Very weird and good. Review published 11/08/2024 Jujutsu Kaisen Series Author: Gege Akutami Publisher: Viz Media By Rohan T. 7th grade Brooklyn, NY Jjk is a very Good Manga Series! It is probably mature for someone 9 or younger so I recommend ages 10+ or so! It has good characters like Gojo... (if you've heard of Jjk you probably know who he is!) Here's a summary of what you should expect: Yuji Itadori is a normal high school student... until Megumi Fushiguro comes and a Curse is fighting them. Yuji eats a cursed finger in order to survive! That is the finger of Ryomen Sukuna aka The Strongest. Satoru Gojo is the one who trains Yuji, along with Megumi, Nobara, Toge, Yuta (read book 0), Maki and Panda. Pretty solid book if u ask me! Shakespeare and Company 37 Rue de la Bûcherie, 75005 Paris, France By Asha R., 8th Grade This summer my mom, my dida (grandma) and I went on a trip to Paris. It was a fabulous trip with amazing food and great places to visit. One of the highlights for me that would totally get me going back was this tiny cluttered English bookstore called “Shakespeare and Company." Usually, when I go into a bookstore and I prepare to judge it, I compare it to my favorite bookstore, Community Bookstore, which is in Park Slope. To be completely honest, most of them aren’t as good as Community Bookstore (in my opinion) and I end up fighting my mom when she tries to drag me back. However, Shakespeare and Company was like a dream for readers. Located at 37 Rue de la Bûcherie in Paris on the banks of the Seine, Shakespeare and Co is right by Notre-Dame Cathedral and Sainte-Chapelle. If anybody goes to Paris, I would tell them to go and see Notre-Dame and Sainte-Chapelle and then go check out Shakespeare and Company. Though to be completely honest, I could spend my entire day in that bookstore. When you step inside you are met with a maze of bookshelves, vintage chairs, typewriters, and the cozy smell of old books. Cats wander around the cluttered books, adding to the charm. Avid readers sit on the many soft chairs, lost in a book sitting on their laps. Constructed in the early 17th century, the building was originally a monastery which gives old but comfortable vibes. It became a bookstore in 1951, founded by George Whitman who said on the first day that artists, writers, and intellectuals could come and sleep in the bookstore among the stories. Since that invitation, 74 years have passed and more than 30,000 people have stayed in the bookshop. James Baldwin, William Burroughs, Anaïs Nin, Allen Ginsberg, Richard Wright, Julio Cortázar, and Henry Miller were some of the first visitors that came to the bookstore. Currently, George Whitman's daughter, Sylvia Whitman, now runs the bookshop with David Delannet, her partner. Obviously, Paris is a little far but if you can get there, try to find some time to visit this charming bookstore.
